So we stopped over at a lovely waterhole near Elliot, called Longreach Waterhole - although it's nowhere near Longreach!
Just before Elliot is the almost ghost town of Newcastle Waters. I love a good derelict building!
Then it's a short hop to the waterhole.
It's about 10 kms of dirt road to get in - a bit sandy in places, but we got in OK, and found a spot right on the edge of the waterhole. This is a huge waterhole and there's plenty of room for everyone.
Plus we were in the box seat for an amazing sunset.
There were lots of birds - waterbirds and the non-water variety.
Oh, and the sunrise was pretty too.
We were tempted to stay 2 nights and put the canoe in but it was quite windy and I don't think my arms had recovered from Katherine Gorge.
The next night we stopped at the Devils Marbles, an easy stopping point as it is just off the highway.
This was such a contrast to the previous night. Very flat and dry but you cannot quibble with the beauty of the marbles. Especially at sunset and sunrise.
We did call in at Tennant Creek and had lunch at the green dam north of town.
We wanted to visit the aboriginal art and craft centre, but it was closed! Perhaps due to the Tennant Creek festival being on that day.
Sturts desert pea outside the men's loos at Mary Ann Dam. |
And we did stop at Barrow Creek to look over one of the 4 remaining overland telegraph stations. That was great.
Cannot say the same for the Barrow Creek roadhouse.
Very disappointing - paid 50c to use the loo, which was putrid. I generally try and buy something if I use a roadhouse loo, like a (very expensive) bar of chocolate, just to help keep them going, but at Barrow Creek, I couldn't find anything - seriously.
The inside of the pub had a certain quirkiness, as we have come to expect in The Territory, but just drive on by folks!
And on the third day we arrived in Alice Springs.
