I have long wanted to go to Carnarvon Gorge and for one reason or another I've never got there - until now.
It's kind of on the way to Darwin, just a little detour really and we do have all the time in the world.
Carnarvon is sort of in the middle of nowhere but is so worth going to. After travelling from the flat lands you see the escarpment rise up before you. White cliffs of sandstone.
Luckily we booked ahead as it is a very busy spot in the school holidays.
The campground in the National Park is only open school holidays but I think it doesn't take caravans. So the only other place to camp is the Carnarvon Gorge Resort just outside the national park.
We were lucky to get in. They opened up the group camping area to random travellers as there must have been no groups booked in. It has no power so we hoped it wouldn't get too cold. But it was actually a nice secluded spot.
I wasn't feeling very well at all, just a cold, but it gave G the opportunity to go off on his own and do a longer walk. So one day he walked to the top end of the gorge and back a return trip of 22kms. I explored Baloon cave and the Rock Pool where some brave kids were swimming in the chilly water.
The next day I felt well enough to manage a shorter walk, back up the gorge to a rock art site and also to an amazing feature in the cliff a huge vertical hole, difficult to explain - you'll just have to go there!
To top it off there are platypuses in the creek behind the camping area and we saw a parade of emus crossing the road as we drove out!
